Volunteer Opportunities
Sunshine Foundation of Northwest Ohio Individual Volunteers
Volunteering as a Group
Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers have played a pivotal role at Sunshine for many years. In fact, Sunshine's involvement with the Mennonite Church began with a couple from Archbold, Ohio who volunteered to help with mending residents' clothing. The "mending ladies" still come to the Children's Home from area Mennonite churches once a month to repair worn clothing.

Today Sunshine volunteers can choose from a variety of opportunities. Volunteers can help out daily, weekly, monthly or just a couple of times per year. Volunteer opportunities can be crafted around each person's interests and schedule. Here are just a few of the ways volunteers get involved at Sunshine:

Individual Volunteers
  1. Therapeutic Horseback Riding Side Walkers assist our staff in creating a safe, enjoyable riding experience for all our riding participants. No previous experience is necessary. Sunshine provides a training class.
  2. Recreation Aides assist with arts and crafts, gardening, music, swimming, off-grounds trips, etc. Some are Special Olympics trainers in the spring, others are camp counselors during the summer. Recreational Aides assist staff with recreational activities and outings during our weekend respite programming.
  3. Swimming Assistants assist residents one-on-one in our heated pool so they can participate in various water activities. Volunteers must be 16 years old.
  4. Spiritual Life Volunteers assist in the many spiritual life activities at Sunshine including worship times, Hootenannies and Faith & Light meetings. These activities vary in time and context but all are designed with the goal of nurturing the spiritual growth of those who are involved. Spiritual Life volunteers should have a growing faith of their own and be interested in promoting and encouraging the faith growth of the residents. Volunteers typically assist in planned activities such as singing, praying, dancing, playing instruments, reading and making crafts.
  5. Rays of Hope is a volunteer driven program, serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their siblings by providing meaningful activities and a chance to foster relationships with volunteers. It has been our experience that such friendships are not only fun but also are a source of growth in faith, love and hope for all involved.
  6. One-on-One Volunteers work with an individual resident for six months, touching all aspects of the resident's life. Special friendships grow through these regular visits, often continuing far beyond the initial six-month commitment. "One-on-One" volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate in the Children's Home and at least 18 years of age for assignment at Family Care Homes. Regular attendance is vital. A weekly commitment over three to six months is recommended.
Volunteering as a Group

Over the years the Sunshine community has benefited greatly from both small and large groups of volunteers that have come from churches, synagogues, businesses, schools and service organizations. Building a barn, wrapping Christmas presents, landscaping, performing music for Spiritual Life programs and playing with children in the Parents Time Out Program are just a few of the many ways groups of volunteers have served Sunshine. If your group is interested in finding out how they can serve Sunshine, contact our volunteer coordinator 419-794-1369. Please keep in mind that the goal of our volunteer department is to balance the needs of both our volunteers as well as the needs of our residents and clients.

Volunteer Requirements

Young persons under the age of 14 must volunteer with a parent or adult sibling. There are no other special requirements for volunteers-just a loving spirit and a desire to help others.

A general orientation is provided for all volunteers. Training is available as needed. Volunteer orientations are held on a regular basis at our main office in Maumee. Call the volunteer coordinator at 419-794-1369. for upcoming dates and times.
