Sunshine Today
Sunshine Foundation of Northwest Ohio Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio was founded in 1949 by Roy and Georgette Engler, a Maumee, Ohio couple who were the parents of five children with mental retardation. Their vision was to create a home for children with disabilities that would provide care in a clean, safe and loving environment.

In 1960, Sunshine Children's Home became affiliated with the Mennonite Church and a volunteer board of directors took over operations from the Englers. Sunshine Children's Home became Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio in 1994. Today Sunshine Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit agency overseen by Mennonite Health Services.

Primary funding comes from Medicaid and other government programs for people with disabilities. The Sunshine Foundation, Inc., a non-profit foundation dedicated to raising support for Sunshine Inc., provides additional funding for capital projects and resident needs.

While Sunshine started as a home for young children with developmental disabilities, it has broadened the scope of its services many times to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities in northwest Ohio and the families who care for them. The agency serves nearly 1,000 families each year by providing residential and related services in Lucas, Fulton, Wood and Allen Counties.

Today clients range in age from 6 to 86. Services are provided at the Children's Home, in community-based family care (group) homes, in the client's own home (supported living) and at the respite care facilities located on the Sunshine campus. A wide variety of support programs are available including vocational training, therapy services, family support services, recreation programs and summer day camp.
